My Review – 4 Stars
I struggled with how to rate this book. I didn’t love it, but it definitely kept me intrigued and now wanting for more. Skye is a good writer. She certainly has the ability to weave a tale that is dark and twisted yet leaves you with hope for the future of her characters. The King is exactly that. This book is honest and gritty. We are introduced to the seedy side of poverty and addiction. Skye gives us a glimpse into the life of Penny, a little girl and later teen, who has the burden of protecting and fending for herself while her father feeds his gambling addiction. She’s thrust into a world to which no girl should be subjected. And while she’s struggling to stay alive and keep her sanity, she has hope in the form of an unlikely ally, the son of the very man that wants to own and destroy her.
Note that this is just the beginning. The King is the backstory of how Penny and Damon met and became the individuals they are today. This book lays the foundation of despair for all they’ve endured but also hope for what’s to come. Since we are looking into the past, I want to mention the age gap between these characters. Damon is 10 years older than Penny, though with all she’s lived through, she’s likely equal to him emotionally. There is no sex, but they clearly have a connection and attraction. Thankfully, Damon is resistant to anything physical and attempts to distance himself from Penny emotionally because of the age difference as well as in hopes that she might have a normal life someday.
