When my eyes are closed, the monster can’t ever see me.
When I sing a song in my head, the monster can’t ever hear me.
When I pretend my bedroom is a playground where I play hide and seek, the monster can’t ever find me.

The darkness should frighten me.
I should worry I’ll find more monsters…monsters scarier than him.
But I’m not afraid.

It’s safe here.
When I’m inside of my head…

He. Can’t. Ever. Touch. Me.

Whispers and the Roars is a dark romance. Strong sexual themes and violence, which could trigger emotional distress are found in this story. The abuse written in this story is graphic and not glossed over which could be upsetting to some. Proceed with caution. This story is NOT for everyone.

My Review

This is a story about acceptance, unwavering friendship, undying love, healing, and family. K. Webster wrote a fantastically unique story that she masterfully wove through the past and the present. I fell in love with the characters. I hurt for them. I longed to take away their pain. And I rejoiced with them when they finally found their happiness.

Even with the warning, or maybe because of it, I was terrified of what I would find within the pages of this book. The prologue and chapter that followed didn’t quell my racing pulse. My heart broke for Kady, and I hadn’t even read her story yet. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the love story I found myself reading. That’s not to say that the disturbing events from her past weren’t incorporated throughout the story, but her relationships with those around her overshadowed the horrors she endured as a child.

It’s rare that I’m truly surprised when reading a book, but I was completely taken off guard by this one. There was so much love, anger, pain, and strength of character demonstrated by all involved in Kady’s life. My emotions were all over the place as I read her and Yeo’s journey. There were moments when I was confused by the choices Yeo and Kady made, but in the end it all comes together. Don’t give up on this one. I promise you won’t regret it.
