Wilder (The Renegades #1)
September 19, 2016
He’s Paxton Wilder.
Twenty-two-year-old, tattooed, smoking-hot leader of the Renegades.
Five time X Games medalist.
The world is his playground—especially this year—and, for the next nine months, I’m stuck as his tutor on the Study at Sea program.
He’s too busy staging worldwide stunts for his documentary to get to class.
But if I can’t get him to take academics seriously, I’ll lose my scholarship…if I don’t lose my heart first.
Six unlikely friends on a nine-month cruise with the Study at Sea program will learn that chemistry is more than a subject and the best lessons aren’t taught in the classroom…but in the heart.
Wilder has officially become one of my new favorites! Oh how I wish this was a movie! There is so much going on in this story—intrigue, adventure, hidden secrets, and romance. And then there is the insanely hot Paxton Wilder, X Games gold medalist and resident panty-melter! Swoon… I think I’ve found my new book boyfriend! Damn, Paxton is everything I could ever dream up.
He was every fantasy. Every bad boy I’d been warned against. Every athlete I’d ever admired. Every prom king and every outlaw at the same time. He was the untouchable, the answer to every love letter I’d never gotten, and the only cure for the ache that was steadily growing, unfurling in my stomach. And for some reason I’d never understand, Paxton Wilder was looking at me like I was dessert.
I loved everything about this book! Leah and Paxton’s romance was epic. Their chemistry is off the charts. Rebecca created the perfect combination of a feisty, smart, extremely likable woman in Leah and the strong, sweet, adrenaline junkie in Paxton. They couldn’t have been more perfectly matched. At first, Paxton comes off as this cocky man-whore, but it’s clear that he’s created his Wilder persona for the world to see. Only when he’s with Leah does he become just Pax, letting his true self shine through. Most notably when she outright dismisses him at their first meeting. He doesn’t quite know what to think about her not fawning all over him like the rest of the world. The question then becomes, does he want her to? No. Paxton realizes he’s going to have to work hard to gain her trust and get her to see that they can be so much more than the academic pairing that brought them together. With his single-mindedness when it comes to achieving a goal, he knew he could do it.
I was going to have to work for Leah like I did every single stunt, with a plan and a ton of balls. Half-assed got you hurt. It was all-in or watch from the sidelines. I was all-in.
Rebecca did a fantastic job of building their relationship slowly. Paxton and Leah took the time to get to know each other and connect. That’s not to say they both didn’t anticipate the moment when they would be together. Their kisses were extremely sensual and all consuming, as was everything with these two. The little touches and the tenderness that Paxton showed went against everything Leah thought she knew about him. It’s not surprising that she was confused by the attention. Was he really that into her or was she just a conquest before he was off onto another “stunt” to master?
I love how they balance each other out. Paxton always wants to go higher and faster or come up with a stunt that’s a little more insane than the last, but Leah helps soothe his adrenaline-junky soul while he’s giving her a chance to face her fears, be in the present, and live again. They were everything the other didn’t know they needed.
“This time I used everything, my concentration, my body, my mind, all of me, to get you up here, and seeing you smile feels better than landing any trick.” – Paxton
He was magnetic, hypnotizing. It wasn’t just the body, the face, or the tattoos. He made me feel anything was possible, like there was a whole shiny world waiting for me to step inside and explore. He was everything I wasn’t, but he made me feel like I could be.
There’s also so much history that is slowly revealed to the reader and each other. I love it when I have to keep guessing, and I couldn’t wait to learn all of their secrets.
