Who knew the apocalypse could be so sexy?
Nina can shoot a gun, start a fire, and kick some serious ass. So when a killer virus and solar storm decimate the country, she’s as prepared as possible to survive. She just needs a motorcycle to navigate the cluttered roads and meet up with her family.
Creed, former Marine, is tattooed and tough. He’s scarred inside and out. Loss is no stranger to him, and he avoids getting close to anyone at all costs.
When Nina tries to steal his motorcycle they have a vicious fight, but necessity and attraction force them into an uneasy alliance. They travel together through the dangerous landscape, where trouble lurks around every corner and they need each other to survive.
But the biggest danger just might be falling in love.
Equally as exciting as it is sexy, Afterglow contains graphic sex and some violence, so please read at your own risk. 18+ recommended.
I won Afterglow as one of Maria Monroe’s author giveaways. And I’m so glad that I did! This author has talent! I was hooked into this story from the first page. Afterglow is similar to The Walking Dead in terms of the mass casualties, ghost towns, and fighting to survive but without the zombies. Don’t mistake this for a copycat story. Maria definitely made it her own. While the story occurs during the aftermath of a viral outbreak, there is no doubt that this is a romance. However, this book is about more than just the heat. I’ve read many books where the hero and heroine feel that instant chemistry and just go for it leaving the basis of the story behind. This is not one of those books! Nina and Creed have to find a way to survive during an apocalypse. The author includes a description of every aspect from food, weapons, warmth, and hygiene to the emotional aspects of living in this new world. Nina is prepared and has a well thought out plan, thanks to Grandma Lottie (another strong woman!). She just needs to find a way to make it happen. That’s where Creed comes in.
I’m a huge fan of smart, strong, capable, independent heroines, and that is exactly who Nina is. She is totally bad-ass! There is one scene where she’s ready to defend herself in just her panties. That’s hot! And then there’s Creed. Who doesn’t love a tattooed, motorcycle riding Marine? Fanning myself over here! He’s funny and protective, which is expected with him being a Marine. These two couldn’t have been more perfect for each other! I loved their dialogue and playful banter.
I love how Maria worked up to Nina and Creed’s intimacy. I understand why they kept holding back. Their uncertainty and fear were palpable. I could feel Creed’s pain for all the loss he’s experienced in war and at home. Why would he want to go through that again? And then there’s Nina, who isn’t ready for the vulnerability she feels when she’s with Creed. They both try to close themselves off because it’s easier than loving and losing someone during this unknown time. I love when they finally let go and lose themselves in each other. The sex is sensual and slow. So much passion and want between these two. And it only gets better from there.
I hope you’ll take a chance on this author. Maria is absolutely fabulous. I can’t wait to read more!
